A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree

Kaikohe West School made a Pukeko in a Ponga Tree for Santaś Grotto in Kaikohe. It was a collaborative effort between Rooms 5, 6, 13 and 15. Whaea Raewyn helped in Room 6 - we made 10 juicy fish heads, 5 big fat pigs and 4 huhu grubs. They looked amazing! You can visit Santaś grotto between 10am and 2pm until December 23rd.

Peruperu and wildflowers

Now that the weather is getting better we have started planting. We planted some wildflower seeds to provide food for the bees this summer.
Hone and Karen have been teaching us how to grow peruperu. We moved our seedlings into bigger containers on Wednesday.

First we measured our plants and recorded the information

Then we filled the big containers with straw and cut around the bottom of our seedling containers.

After that we made two nests in the straw.

Next we put some soil in the nest and put our plant on top.

We put some more soil on top and watered our plants carefully.

Car wash fundraising and fractions

We are fundraising for our sleepover and sailing excursion on the R Tucker Thompson next month. On Friday we washed 11 cars and made over $60! We wrote procedures during the week so we would know what to do.

Washing Cars for Teachers

Materials
  • Hose
  • Sponge
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Carwash soap
  • Towels

First fill a bucket with water and add car wash soap.
Next get another bucket and fill it with plain water.
Then check that all the windows are closed so no water wets the seats.
After that get your hose and wash down the car. Then get a cloth and put it in the soapy water.
After that get your sponge and wipe the dirt off the car. Then rinse the sponge out into the plain water. Keep going until the car is clean.
And then hose off the car again.
Finally dry the car with towels.

Bee Aware Month and Book Week

We had some visitors from Comvita who shared lots of information about bees with us. September is Bee Aware month. Bees are such fascinating and important creatures and we really need to look after them.

Dan the Bee Man showed us the tools he uses to look after bees.
Mahia wearing a beekeeperś veil.

We had a close up look at a queen bee and all of her workers.

We also celebrated Book Week this week and on Friday we dressed up as our favourite book characters.

Research and Nets

For geometry we made nets. First we rolled the wooden cubes and traced around each face, then we cut them out and folded the paper on the lines to make our own paper cubes.

We have been researching Hochstetterś frogs. They are one of four New Zealand native frogs and we have found lots of interesting facts.
