Sharon Holt and Scott Base

We had two lots of virtual visitors in Room 3 this week. Sharon Holt, author of the Te Reo Singalong books, and Scott Base in Antarctica!

Here is the video of Sharon Holt talking about how she became an author. She gives lots of good tips for aspiring writers. If you skip to 51:38 you will hear her answer to Yozarna's question, "Do you write the words or the music first for your singalong books?"

On Thursday morning we had a Zoom meeting with Scott Base in Antarctica. We were so excited we forgot to take a screenshot! The men we spoke to haven't seen the sun since April 20th. Jayden asked them if it is cloudy in Antarctica and they said "Yes, it is quite cloudy at the moment."

Te Pou

We were lucky to have Whaea Koryna and Matua Floyd in our class on Friday. They helped us learn Te Pou in preparation for the cultural festival later this term.  Manakitanga and Jayden took turns to lead the waiata and they both did a great job. We have so much talent in Room 3!

Words of Wisdom and Matariki art

We made posters for our school values. Nesta wrote a beautiful message (words we should all live by):

"Respect. Say nice words and be kind to each other every day. But don't be scared to tell the truth. To say that you don't know the answer to something. Just believe in yourself. Let it out. You can do it."

We also did some Matariki art so we can come back after the holiday to some beautiful artwork on our classroom walls:

Relievers and Lego creations

On Monday our teacher was sick so we had a reliever. We had a lot of fun with Whaea Janice and she left a note for us to read the next day:

We also made some characters using Lego:

Rhyming poems and fabulous shoes

This week we practised writing some rhyming poems. First we watched a video by Kenn Nesbitt explaining how to write rhymes:

Then we had a go at writing our own poems. Here are some examples:

I love my brother
and he loves me too.
But I think of corona
When he says "Achoo".
by Ahzaria-Lee

The picnic was ruined by ants
So I danced.
by Tailah

We have also been practising a play and making props. We needed some fabulous shoes so Ashleigh is modelling some cardboard shoes she made with her group. They covered them with contact to make them even more fabulous!

Zoom breakouts!

This week we had our usual Zoom meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday we read the final chapter of Spaghetti Giraffe. To celebrate we all went on Zoom as individuals and got put into breakout rooms so we could talk to students from other schools. It was very exciting and we briefly made some new friends.

Bling Bling Toi Marama

We have started working on our artwork for the Kaikohe light festival which will open on 2nd July at Te Pū O Te Wheke Gallery.

First we showed our ideas using Sharpies and dye.

We are using recycled plastic water bottles to make our creation. We have been busy cutting and painting.

Can you guess what we are making?
