Surf Live Saving NZ at Ahipara

We had an amazing day at Ahipara with Room 11. What a way to end the year!

Thank you so much to the whanau who came along for the day, I hope you enjoyed it as much as the students did.

Pizzas and ice cream

On Friday we used the  new KWS pizza oven to cook our pizzas. We each assembled our own pizza from a choice of toppings and they were delicious! We also had ice cream to celebrate the 2nd last week of 2020 at school.

School yearbook photo

This year Whaea Raewyn is organising a school yearbook. It is a lot of work! Room 3 posed for a class photo to go in the yearbook. It will be a great memento. We had 3 people away, it is hard to get a photo with everybody in it!

We planted some seedlings in our class garden this week.

On Friday we had some choosing time - we played Kahoot, did some painting and drawing and made music.

Cake Stall and Water Safety

We had a cake stall on Friday and thanks to a generous travel subsidy from Surf Lifesaving NZ we now have enough money for our bus to Ahipara.

We also had a water safety lesson where we learned how to identify a rip and what to do if you need help in the water. We practiced the HELP position (heat escape lessening position) to keep ourselves warm.

The Whale

We 'read' a fabulous picture book this week called The Whale. There were (almost) no words in the book! We were able to tell the story using the incredible illustrations.

Scavenger Hunt, Unwanted Visitors and Dinosaurs under the bed!

We have been learning to write instructions. On Thursday we did a scavenger hunt looking for bossy words (imperative verbs) in our class library.

The Level 3 Reading Group read about Unwanted Visitors by Michele Boston in the School Journal Part 2 Number 3 2008. The article provides information about the different kinds of wasps found in NZ but focuses on the Asian wasp. They made posters to warn people about them:

Jayden was inspired by a stop motion animation Mrs Miller shared with us called Dragons under the Bed. He made his own version - Dinosaurs under the bed! You can check it out on his blog: https://kwsjaydent.blogspot.com/. I'm sure he would love some comments on his awesome mahi.

Māori Language Moment and Edison robots

Our School joined the Māori language moment at 12pm on Monday. We sang Toro Mai and did a quick haka to mark the day and hour 48 years ago when a petition was presented to parliament demanding that Te Reo Maori be taught in New Zealand Schools. We are very grateful!

On Friday we got out the Edison robots that Room 3 and Room 11 won from Genesis Energy last year. We had a lot of fun coding them and having sumo wrestling tournaments.  On Tuesday we will be teaching our teina in Room 14 how to use the robots.

Our experience with Scratch made the coding easy.

Ashleigh and Calaise were two of our experts.

Lots of critical thinking and problem solving!

Project Island Song

We had the most fabulous day at Urupukapuka Island on Thursday. We learned about our precious marine environment and how to protect our endemic plants and wildlife. We planted some trees and made traps. On the trip back to Paihia we even saw some Bottlenose dolphins!

Koroua was our biosecurity officer, checking the bags to make sure we didn't translocate any pests to the island.

Shaniadawn was in charge of Health and Safety, checking the passenger list.

Tamati showed us how to put on the lifejackets.

Caitlin enjoying the boat ride out to the island.

North, south, east and west.

What a view!

Climbing the fence safely.

Proud karo tree planters.

Group photo. Awesome Room 3.

Lots of collaboration needed to construct our traps.

Mangamutu Stream and an origami dragon

This week we set out up Omapere Road to do some water quality testing of the Mangamutu Stream. We had fun using all of the equipment -  the thermometer, bathyscope, periscope, gravelometer, classification sheet, measuring tapes and stopwatches. We had to carefully record the data we collected.
